Inhalable Matter (I’M) is a prototype constructed from recyclable materials that aggregates ‘living modules’ to support the growth and development of plants. The structure aims to reduce carbon dioxide, increase humidity, remove toxic pollutants, and control airborne dust levels in interior environments. I’M was built using modular pots, interconnected by mycelium, providing plants with an ecosystem similar to one found in the forest. A state-of-the-art eco-lighting and micro-watering system is constructed, such that, the plant’s life cycle is entirely supported by the structure, eliminating the need for day-to-day maintenance. I’M sensors can read fluctuations in galvanic conductance from the plant’s leaves and converts the data into light and sound signals, allowing humans to communicate with plants. I’M is affordable and can be easily installed in a wide variety of interiors and community spaces across the globe.

This project was designed and fabricated by Intelligent Morphology in Architecture (IM-A), an interdisciplinary design studio that focuses on the intersection between biology, digital fabrication, and computational design.
