Putting communities at the heart of place-based retrofit - curated by the National Retrofit Hub

14 May 2026
Buildings and Materials Stage

The NRH’s State of the Nation report revealed under-delivery of both the pace and quality of current retrofit schemes and citizens are disengaged and lack trust in retrofit. Blanket approaches are not working for us. A narrow focus on single measures has created an uncoordinated and fragmented supply chain, and the dynamics between citizens and communities that should contribute to decision-making have been neglected. Place-based approaches are reshaping the delivery of retrofit by moving beyond schemes which are blind to context, by connecting national strategy and resources to local communities. These approaches build from an understanding of local context and supply chains to design retrofit strategies that deliver on resident and community needs. At this session you’ll hear from expert organisations, with experience in supporting, delivering and evaluating place-based approaches. We will discuss actionable steps to help devise and deliver place based retrofit.
