Colloide go chemical free at Viking Energy Centre

Colloide selected IWTM’s chemical free water treatment for the cutting-edge Viking Energy Centre. The energy network which takes heat from the River Tyne has a system volume of 250m3 and is the first to combine this many renewable technologies for the operation of the network.

An IWTM Industrial Type 1000 unit with the ability to manage heat networks with volumes of up to 300,000l, was selected along with a Profill 50. IWTM’s industrial units are tested to higher temperatures and pressure ratings than standard units.

Protechnical Services delivered the chemical free process for the precom fill and clean in line with IWTM’s guidelines which achieve VDI2035 water quality standards. IWTM’s ClearView monitoring system was installed enabling real time water quality reporting direct to the BMS.

Having already worked with Colloide, IWTM was recognised for its ability to achieve the sustainability and performance required by the project alongside whole life cycle cost benefits. Given the proximity to the river and previous Nutrient Neutrality bylaws it was also felt it was the better option to avoid the pollution of local water ways. The scheme is estimated to save 1,035 tons of carbon and around half £500,000 in fuel costs each year and received funding from the European Regional Development Fund.

The water source heat pump will extract heat from the water having compressed it to increase the temperature, and is converted into energy in the form of hot water with the distribution network reaching 9 council owned buildings that are currently supplied by fossil fuels. A 1MW solar farm will provide most of the electricity with the scheme expected to run close to carbon neutral in the summer months.

The scheme will be the first to combine a river source heat pump, back up CHP, 1MW of solar and a private wire electrical network with a storage battery. This compliments the councils drive to reduce their carbon emissions in line with its 2030 carbon neutral strategy.
