Mass secondary timber

Share product:

Innovative: Our world-first ‘mass secondary timber’ (MST) products are made entirely from wood recovered from demolition, based on pioneering research from UCL.

Net zero: Extending timber’s lifespan maintains carbon sequestration over the long term. Our products can displace carbon-intensive structural materials like concrete and steel. Unlike harvesting wood from forests, our feedstock is sourced close to where new materials are needed (a local supply chain that vastly reduces transport emissions) and does not need to be kiln dried.

Circular: Wood waste is currently chipped, downcycled and incinerated. UK CLT redirects it into a practical, scalable form of reuse. We turn it into long-life, modular products: cross-laminated secondary timber (CLST) and glued-laminated secondary timber (glulamST) – which are designed for adaptability, upgrade and reuse at the end of their next life.

Regenerative: MST requires no new extraction and provides an alternative to mining non-renewable primary resources. It reduces waste, slowing the rate of materials into landfill, and relieves pressure on plantation forestry, so that there is less need to turn natural forests into mono-species plantations, or plantations can be returned to natural forest, with biodiversity gains.

Planetary health: We enable more bio-based construction, with all its health benefits. Adhesives are important to mass timber; we work with suppliers who are improving adhesives’ material health. Our products are designed for deconstruction, so they can serve many lifespans as durable, modular components, rather than allowing adhesives to be released into the environment.

Driving change: The UK discards 4.5 million tonnes of timber per year. There is an urgent need for cases that demonstrate low-carbon, circular economy principles at scale. By proving the case for reuse in one material flow, we aim to inspire industry incumbents, entrepreneurs and academia to look again at other materials discarded as waste.
