Fiona Barbour

Technical Director - Flood Risk , Mott MacDonald

Fiona Barbour has been working for more than two decades to reduce the impact of climate change through flood risk management, mostly at Mott MacDonald, which she joined in 2011. She is currently supporting the development of the Anglian Water New Reservoir Programme. She is an industry leader in flooding and helps water companies, regulators, and all levels of government globally with their evolving responses to climate challenges. She has been responsible for all stages of project development from strategic analysis and feasibility studies to detailed design of mitigation structures and construction. She has led global communities of 1500 water experts globally.

A Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Barbour has been active in the institution – including chairing its Edinburgh Area Branch – since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2002. She became chair of its flooding community advisory board (now the Nature and Resilience Forum) in 2020, is part of the Learned Society Committee and has recently been appointed Scottish Regional Rep for Council.
She is driven to lead and influencing decision makers to increase our resilience at scale and pace, and to inspire and enable others to do the same.
