Ian Phillips is the Deputy Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, having been appointed as a Member by the Secretary of State in 2013. He is a chartered landscape architect and town planner, running a consultancy based in Farnham, Surrey. His career has included landscape and planning roles in the public, private and not for profit sectors and in both rural and urban environments. He has particular interests in community engagement, planning policy, trees and Green Infrastructure. He has been an active member of the Landscape Institute for many years and was Vice President from 2013 to 2017, and the Institute’s international delegate until 2018. He believes that landscape that not only looks right but works well is vital to deliver good planning, placemaking and protection for c21 and beyond.
