Jon Vanstone

Chair of Industry Competence Committee , NHIC

Jon Vanstone is Chair of the Industry Competence Committee (ICC) within the Building Safety Regulator, where he leads the strategic drive to strengthen competence across the built environment in response to the Building Safety Act. The ICC advises on systemic reform, setting clear expectations for individuals and organisations to demonstrate, maintain and evidence competence in higher-risk and wider building work. Jon’s work focuses on supporting industry to embed proportionate, outcomes-based competence frameworks that support cultural change rather than mere compliance.

With more than 20 years’ experience spanning government policy, regulatory oversight and industry leadership, Jon has developed and implemented competency standards across multiple sectors. He specialises in translating regulatory intent into practical operating models that work for regulators, certification bodies and industry alike.

Alongside his ICC role, Jon chairs Certass and the National Home Improvement Council. Through these positions, he works closely with installers, manufacturers and sector leaders to raise professional standards, strengthen consumer protection and support a more accountable, skills-driven retrofit and home improvement market.
