Marcus Paine
Born in Swanage, Dorset in 1967, Marcus is the second son of a Purbeck limestone quarrier, continuing a five-generation family tradition from County Durham to Purbeck. After moving to the Scottish Borders, where his parents had purchased a farm, he founded Hutton Stone Co. Ltd. in 1994, initially cutting masonry in a disused barn. The company began by supplying reclaimed stone and sourced slab from other producers. In 1999, it reopened Swinton Quarry, historically a key supplier of masonry across the Borders, North Northumberland, and Edinburgh.
Today, the business employs 44 staff, operates three exclusive quarries, and stocks over 20 additional UK stone types. With a turnover of around £3.2 million, it runs purpose-built production facilities in the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland, serving projects nationwide.
Marcus now focuses on promoting a sustainable vision for the stone industry and serves as President of the European Stone Federation, EuroRoc, championing a modern “New Stone Age.”
