Futurebuild’s renowned conference has taken place every March for the past 15 years and we couldn’t leave it a whole year without delivering you the high-level content you would usually find centre stage.
We have partnered with the Edge to put together a conference webinar series that will explore the actions that we, the built environment, need to take now.
Faced with a patient the good doctor first tries to establish what their present condition is and then works out with the patient what to do about it. For a number of reasons, of both long and short standing, it can reasonably be said that ‘we’ – the world in its entirety – are in a somewhat fragile state whether the spotlight is put on nature, natural resources, the economy and employment, the state of our buildings and infrastructure or our own physical and mental health.
As with our ‘good doctor’, recognising the problems and difficulties is a first step to doing something about them. Of course, a good doctor will also work out how to treat the patient as a whole, not just as a constellation of symptoms and this is why we must work together to be ‘good doctors’ for our built and natural environment.
The series will be introduced by Robin Nicholson, CBE, Convenor of the Edge.
It is agreed that we are in a climate and ecological emergency and that time is incredibly short if we are to deliver a net zero built environment by 2050 while also putting in place the adaptation measures to make life liveable on our crowded planet in the years ahead. We need to learn how to achieve this; placing an urgent onus on education to teach the skills, understanding and ecological standards necessary for working with our built and natural environment.
What will students need to know when they graduate in ten years’ time? What will society require of them? How fast can the education system change to accommodate the immediacy of the task?
This Edge-Futurebuild session invites experts in their field to outline their vision for built environment education in 2031 and explain how we are going to get there.
Paul Crutzen, meteorologist and atmospheric chemist who won a Nobel Prize for stratospheric ozone destruction died on 28th January 2021. He said in his Nobel lecture (1995) that ”…the experiences of the early 1970s had made it utterly clear to me that human activities had grown so much that they could compete and interfere with natural processes.” Crutzen first coined the phrase ‘anthropocene’ as the epoch in which humans’ impact on the earth rivalled that of nature’.
Recognising that our economies, livelihoods and well-being all rely on Nature, in 2018 HM Treasury commissioned Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta to explore the sustainability of our interactions with nature and identify what we must urgent do differently.
This Edge-Futurebuild session will explore key issues to identify the actions needed for systemic change.
It is time to embrace the challenge and put our plans into action. The construction industry is well-placed to deliver on both new build and retrofit so that our built environment is fit for purpose and achieves the 100% net zero targets that we have set ourselves. We are able to put aside poor infrastructure, low productivity, poor health and well-being and a degraded natural environment in favour of an inhabitable world with a healthy, life enhancing natural environment with effectively reused and retrofitted buildings and a well-maintained low carbon infrastructure. This session will show how the construction industry is responding the challenge and ready to deliver.
