Steel production contributes to 9% of global carbon dioxide emissions, but the industry is shifting towards green steel plants to reduce emissions by 50% by 2050. The EU increased its green steel projects to 38 in 2023, and Germany invested $9.1bn in decarbonisation. Green hydrogen production could be a viable process, but access to green hydrogen is a barrier. The EU highlights the need for a 20% increase in electricity production to produce hydrogen for full decarbonisation.
