Three big things we still don’t know about AI’s energy burden

Researchers sought to uncover how much energy AI models like ChatGPT or Gemini consume per response, a figure long withheld by companies. In 2023, OpenAI and Google finally revealed estimates: 0.34 and 0.24 watt hours per query, respectively, aligning with prior guesses. Yet experts caution these figures lack context, omit demanding tasks, and exclude modalities like video and image generation.
