Game Changers LIVE – Low Carbon Concrete edition with headline partner The Concrete Centre and in partnership with Concrete Futures, took take place on Thursday 22 April 2021.
Chaired by Claire Ackerman, The Concrete Centre, this online event explored how carbon can be saved now by using low carbon concretes and designing low carbon concrete structures. Catch up up on sessions on demand and find about the innovations that form part of the industry roadmap to decarbonise cement and concrete.
Claire leads The Concrete Centre, who provide published guidance for the design and use of concrete in our built environment, as part of the Mineral Products Association (MPA).
Claire is co-lead of the MPA UK Concrete Sustainable Construction Group that is responsible for the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy and is a member of a Global Cement and Concrete Association outreach working group. Claire is also an active member of the Green Construction Board Low Carbon Concrete Group.

The keynote address presented:
– An overview of approaches for achieving low carbon buildings using concrete; industry decarbonisation initiatives; innovative concretes
– Opportunities to save carbon now using low carbon concretes
– Design options for saving concrete through lean design
Richard Kershaw, Technical Manager outlined the benefits of concrete, highlight how changes to specification and design of concrete and concrete structures could lead to a more sustainable construction.
Nick’s presentation covered the results of Tarmac’s research piece ‘Clean construction: unlocking net zero.’ and provided expert commentary on current industry approaches to cutting carbon and how the client and supply chain dynamic needs to change for a net zero world.
Reducing the carbon emissions associated with concrete is now of critical importance throughout the construction supply chain. Dr Nina Cardinal, Senior Technical Manager, Hanson presented how the use of new types of cement can produce sustainable, low carbon concrete.
Dr Diana Casey described the innovations required in low carbon cement and concretes, fuel switching and carbon capture use or storage and the downstream benefits of using concrete that will all contribute to removing more emissions from the atmosphere than the sector emits.
Dr Pete Winslow, Associate Director presented an overview of the work Expedition Engineering have been doing in supporting Network Rail’s Technical Authority and Decarbonisation Programme in efforts to reduce the CO2e associated with its construction projects, primarily on the use of concrete within Buildings and Civils.
A short overview of how Euston Station a HS2 project has been introducing low carbon concrete and the challenges associated. This talk shares an insight into the good news stories so far, how the challenges can hopefully be addressed and a view of the hopes for the next 10-12 years of this major project.
Robert Gordon, Senior Associate and Architect Technician HOK, will take a deeper look at the Royal Papworth Hospital. Robert Gordon, Senior Associate at HOK, will be discussing the successful implementation of dRofus in complex projects.
Antony Brophy, Director of Business Development, UK will discuss; Dame Judith Hackitt’s call for a systematic change, Problems addressed by ‘The Independent Review of Building Regulation and Fire Safety’, What exactly is the ‘Golden Thread’ of information about? What has to be done to maintain it? Plus our formula for success.
Andrew Cousins, Customer Success Manager, Onix Work will explain how you can bringing value to your construction related business in a collaborative manner by everyone in the value chain.
