OSTO® is a carbon-negative aggregate that can be incorporated into a variety of concrete applications to lower its carbon emissions.
Typically 3-15% aggregate replacement is required to achieve net zero concrete. This level should be optimised through an appropriate testing program to ensure the desired material properties are achieved.
The negative overall carbon footprint for OSTO comes from:
(1) Avoidance. OSTO is made of waste products that would be incinerated. LCM prevents this waste being burnt which would immediately release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
(2) Mineralisation. OSTO permanently sequesters and stores CO2 in the aggregate, and therefore locks it within the resulting application.
(3) Reduction. OSTO reduces the reliance on traditional carbon intensive lightweight aggregates, therefore, enables construction firms to replace carbon-intensive materials in their value chain.
