The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is the UK’s national institute for advanced materials research and innovation. Providing access to world-class research capabilities, infrastructure, expertise, and skills development, Royce works with the UK materials community to develop solutions to national and global challenges.
The Sustainable Materials Innovation Hub is part of the Henry Royce Institute at the University of Manchester. The SMI Hub is supported by an ecosystem of over 50 researchers and academics operating out of a unique, state-of-the-art lab space, which allows researchers to synthesise, characterise and process polymers on-site
The SMI Hub works with environmentally ambitious businesses and organisations to promote materials circularity and sustainable polymers by combining scientific expertise, technical skills and interdisciplinary perspectives to solve sustainability challenges at a systems level. By working with businesses on cross-cutting themes, including packaging, coatings, materials for construction, health & automotive sectors, contaminated plastic waste, and microplastics, the SMI Hub is able to empower both individual businesses and sectors to achieve their social, environmental and economic sustainability ambitions.
