Q-Bot developed the first affordable, ECO funded solution to retrofit insulation to suspended floors. Fully accredited by BBA and PAS, and developed with the support of BEIS and InnovateUK, Q-Bot’s underfloor insulation is a non-intrusive energy efficiency measure that increases SAP scores, cuts carbon emissions, improves thermal comfort and reduces heating costs (Average savings of £250/yr).
Independent studies have shown that for a typical property, suspended timber floors are responsible for as much as 20% of the total heat loss and 1/3 of draughts. More than 10 million UK homes have suspended timber floors and very few have been insulated. These homes tend to be some of the worst performing, with low EPC scores, high prevalence of fuel poverty, and few practical or cost-effective options to upgrade them.
Q-Bot uses powerful robot to remotely apply insulation to suspended floors. The robot is inserted under the floor through a small opening, surveys the void and condition, applies a spray foam to the underside of floorboards, and verifies the area/depth of insulation applied. This innovative solution allows to insulate hard to treat area, avoiding the need to remove furniture, carpets and floorboards, and to locate the robotic work station outside the home to mitigate risks. This highlights the non-disruptive nature of Q-Bot’s solution.
Q-Bot’s solution is one of the cheapest measures to increase the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of a property with an average of 2 to 12 points improvement (read our case study), and achieve carbon abatement targets. The installation process usually takes 1 to 2 and is immediately effective, reducing draughts (1/3 across the whole house), improving thermal comfort, and reducing energy bills. Energy Savings Trust has verified Q-Bot’s energy saving claims, and found that insulating the floor can, at 2022’s energy prices, reduce bills by £190 in a gas-heated property and by £430 in an electrically heated home.
