Dr Joel Hamilton, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Dr Joel Hamilton, Heat Networks Specialist, HNDU – Net Zero Buildings – Clean Heat, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Joel is a passionate engineer and sustainability consultant determined to be a contributor to global sustainable development solutions. His career has been intentionally tailored to provide an understanding of practical technical solutions from an implementation and theoretical perspective.

He currently works as a heat network specialist in The Department of Energy Security and Net Zero part of the UK Central Government Civil Service. In this role he acts as the technical lead for the Heat Network Delivery Unit (HNDU) as well as leading the development of several heat network projects across England and Wales. He leads on the accessing waste heat work streams and the heat network sector resilience workstream.

He chairs the advisory board for GreenSCIES (Green Smart Community Integrated Energy Systems) as well as supporting research and development projects through advisory board membership, presenting at various conferences and generally being a key contact to feed knowledge back to the heat networks team in government.

He has previously worked at Bouygues Energies and Services, part of the €37 Billion turnover Bouygues Group managing the financial risk of a circa £30m energy performance contracting portfolio. Prior to this he worked at Cotopaxi Limited as an industrial energy consultant, E.On in pollution monitoring from coal power stations and Inmarsat, a global satellite company supporting their resilience tools by mapping their networks on Earth.

He holds a PhD in utilising waste heat for absorption refrigeration in the context of rural renewable power plants in developing countries and a masters in a mechanical engineering.
