OeAD student housing is a non-profit student residence provider for international and national students and offers accommodations for around 12,000 students annually throughout Austria. While cooperating with our parent company OeAD-GmbH as well as with Austrian companies and many partner universities worldwide, the main goal is to provide energy efficient, climate friendly and ecologically built student guest houses.
With the construction of the world’s first student residence built to the passive house standard in Vienna (2005) and the “Passive houses for active students! initiative”, the OeAD student housing set an important example and has been regarded as a pioneer in passive house construction and ecological architecture ever since.
As a non-profit organization, it is constantly working on innovative and energy-efficient construction projects: the innovative flexible “PopUp dorms” – wooden containers built in passive house standard – were opened 2015. The “GreenHouse” is the first Zero-Energy student guesthouse worldwide, producing its own energy with a PV system on the roof. The “mineroom” was opened in 2017 and is the first high-volume timber framed passive house, built with six floors and offering room for 200 students.
OeAD student housing was awarded with the FIABICI World Prix d’Excellence for the “PopUp dorms” in 2019 and received the SDG Award in 2020. It was also nominated for the Green Product Award in 2021. The “mineroom” received the “Steirischer Holzbaupreis” 2017 and the Passive House Award 2021, amongst others.
Drawing from its own expertise as a property developer and operator, OeAD student housing is uniquely positioned to disseminate knowledge in the sustainable building sector, which was the basic idea for the founding of the “Green.Building.Solutions.” Summer University in 2011. This was followed by the “Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems” Summer School in 2014. The academic programs start with the ongoing climate and resource crisis, and comprehensively deal with the topic of sustainability – both in the construction and building sector, as well as at the overarching level of our economic and financial system.
