The Futurebuild 2023 Conference sponsored by SNRG and Hub Brussels, is about ‘taking a stand’: looking forward, making a change and taking action.
Recent years have been confusing times for both the UK and the world and from that we take an emphatic message – action is necessary; taking a stand is essential.
In addition to major changes in the UK government and its Head of State, 2022 alone has seen a return to war in Europe, the continuance of the Covid pandemic, floods, drought, record breaking temperatures exposing the inadequacy of our buildings and the fragility of our urban environments, energy shortages and rising energy costs, rampant inflation, food shortages and key worker shortfalls. The Earth has overheated by 1.1°C and is currently heading towards 2-3°C above pre-industrial temperatures. We are in a man-made environmental crisis and we urgently need to work out how to survive and recover from it.
While we may each have our areas of specialism, it is now vital that we factor responding to the climate and ecological emergencies into our everyday decision-making and call-out greenwash at every turn! How and what can we learn from recent events? What should we focus on as we decide what we have to do?
Don’t miss this chance to come together, learn together, change together and most importantly, act together! Check out the full programme below…

Day one will focus on Looking Forward to develop the foresight necessary to break out of our current mindset, for as William Catton has explained – “we tend to seek adaptation to the circumstances we presently confront, not the circumstances posterity will face.”
Day two will explore the nature of Changing and especially ‘behaviour change’. We know that an urgent transition is required but how can we make the necessary changes? What does the transition involve? How can we bring others along with us?
Day three will move on to Taking Action, hearing from those who have been doing just that and exploring plans that can take society and the construction industry forward.
Conference Programme Steering Group
the edge think-tank
Futurebuild has always sought to provide an independent ‘knowledge programme’ and the Edge have been pleased to contribute debating sessions at the conference…
HEAR WHAT THE EDGE CORE MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY...
When leading a Government/industry study into the decarbonisation of the built environment, I found discussions with the Edge were a rare example of hearing multi-disciplinary voices without those terrible twins vested interest and 'not invented here' being in the room. More than a decade later, the Edge is sticking to the task - a more acceptable face of activism, and in the end the kind that gets things done. Get involved.
Paul Morrell, former Chief Construction Adviser to Government
Despairing of the silos in local government and between every built environment profession, I was thrilled to discover the Edge in the late 1990s. Ever since, the Edge has been my go-to place—a forum for challenging orthodoxies and bringing together practical thinkers to come up with integrated solutions for our built and natural environment. The Edge matters because its approach is systemic, reframing problems and solutions and then reframing them again from a range of perspectives and its voice is being heard.
Former Deputy Mayor of London, Nicky Gavron
Futurebuild allows the Edge to assemble three days of high-quality public discussions of key issues in the climate and biodiversity emergency with ministers, civil servants, and industry leaders as well as students and the wider public. The online webinars give the Edge a global audience.
Robin Nicholson, Convenor of the Edge
We want a conference programme that continues to tackle some of the bigger picture issues that our industry needs to respond to. The collective understanding and experience that the Edge brings to curating this programme supports our aim of offering a knowledge programme by the industry for the industry.

We have no excuses – the opportunities to change are here, do we have the courage to act on them?
